Since Vioxx was first introduced on the market in 1999, numerous studies
have continually found that it may cause serious side effects including
cardiovascular problems. In September of 2001 after several of these studies
had come to light, the FDA sent Merck a stern
warning letter outlining the then current findings including the fact
that in one study "serious cardiovascular events were twice as frequent"
with Vioxx treatment. On September 30, 2004, Merck withdrew Vioxx from
the market due to its on study that once again confirmed the problems
with Vioxx. Please see the Vioxx Timeline
for more detail on articles and studies that have shown Vioxx's history
of problems.
